Training of 250 carpenters and masons in seismic construction, Nepal
Earthquake resistant principles and improving local construction quality, 2007-2012
Training for a safer future
We believe that extensive training is essential for a successful project. Before the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal, earthquake-resistant principles were rarely applied in urban and local construction. The last major earthquake had occurred in 1934, meaning most generations had not witnessed such events and did not see the need for earthquake-resistant building practices.
We trained about 250 masons, carpenters, villagers, and representatives from around 20 different Nepali villages on earthquake-resistant principles and how to improve local construction quality. As a result, all schools and construction projects we have built between 2007 – 2012 survived the 2015 Gorkha Earthquakes without any significant damage.
How we worked
Before starting construction, we invited representatives and workers from the villages to a two-day kick-off training session. These sessions included presentations and slides from experts on general construction principles, earthquake knowledge, earthquake-resistant construction methods, and proper material handling. All presentations, movies, and hands-on training were conducted in the Nepalese language.
The training was both theoretical and practical, including on-site sessions on topics like mixing high-quality mortars and concrete, and properly bending steel reinforcements. On-site training continued through multiple rounds of supervision throughout the construction projects, from start to completion.
Our partners and sponsors
These programs were made possible with the help of SEED Foundation from Nepal and its chairman, Damodar Bhakta Thapa, who organized the training sessions and translated for the participants. Two of the training sessions were held in cooperation with and sponsored by CWS and World Vision from Nepal.
